Identification: Manuscript Collection No. 104.

Institutional Sketch

The Association of Hillel Directors was first conceived at a private meeting in 1948 with several midwestern college Hillel directors including: Harry Kaplan (Ohio State University), Ben Kahn (Penn State University), Judah Goldin (University of Iowa), Ted Gordon (University of Pennsylvania) and Alfred Josep (Indiana University). Modelling themselves after the Association of Jewish Center Workers, the original members envisioned the exchange of professional ideas and concerns. In 1949, at the Hillel Director's Conference, the organization was officially recognized by Hillel (and its parent organization B'nai B'rith) while concerns about labor practices were added to the list of goals.

During the presidency of Max Ticktim in 1956, the Association shifted from being a professional organization into a structure similar to a labor union. Unionization would remain a primary focus for the Association until the 1980s and beyond. The Association negotiated with its parent organization B'nai B'rith for professional development and consistent working conditions. They also spent considerable times studying compensation issues including insurance and salary.

The Association meets yearly at the Director's Meeting organized by Hillel. At these meetings a president and board are elected to run the association. Grievance cases are brought before the board and recommendations made on fair resolution of disputes.

Scope and Content Note

The Association of Hillel and Jewish Campus Professionals is a merger of the International Association of Hillel Directors and National Association of Hillel Directors in 1982. While the original organization was founded in 1948 as a medium for exchanging professional experience, they later became deeply involved with labor and unionization issues. The records include correspondence, minutes, the president's files and the records of unionization and grievance cases.

The records contain presidential records, as collected from previous administrations by President Abie Ingber in the mid-1980s. The subjects within each period vary according to the hot-button issues of the times. For example, during Zuckerman's tenure in the immediate post World War II era, materials were collected relating to the Jewish Book Council, while during Ingber's tenure during the 1980s, materials relating to unionization were critical. The majority of grievance case files are from the 1970s.

Within each series, there are materials about the Association's relationship with other similar organizations (leading to an eventual merger) and with their parent organization, B'nai B'rith. There are also reports on Jewish professionals' salaries, and meetings of the Directors of the Association for all time periods.
