Upon his return to the US, Canaan studied at Ohio State University’s School of Journalism in Columbus, Ohio, while concurrently working as an assistant in the University’s TV news workshop. Canaan earned his master’s degree and Ohio State.
Canaan joined the American Israelite and worked as a staff writer, copy editor, and photographer from 1986-1992. He received the first place award for best weekly journalism in Ohio from the State of Ohio bar Associations for authoring a four part series in 1988 entitled "Jews in Ohio’s Prisons: Does Anybody Care?"
In 1993, Canaan started the Israel Faxx, a newsletter sent to interested readers in the local Cincinnati region and throughout the United States. As editor, Canaan compiles and edits the newsletter using news reports from Israel itself, allowing indigenous Israeli news to circulated in the United States.

There are also articles from other Jewish newspapers, as well as an op-ed piece for the Cincinnati Enquirer written in 1989. The collection also includes copies of the Israel Faxx between the years of 1993 and 2010.
