His first pulpit was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Congregation Rodef Shalom where he served until 1940. During World War II Unger was a major in the Army's Corps of Chaplains in the West Indies. Following the war, Unger spent one year in Charleston, South Carolina before becoming the rabbi at Temple Beth Ha Tephila in Asheville, North Carolina. Unger retired from the pulpit in 1961, and remained rabbi emeritus until his death in 1971.
