ACCESS AND PROVENANCE
The ABRAHAM I. SHINEDLING PAPERS were donated to the American
Jewish Archives by Rabbi Abraham I. Shinedling of Albuquerque, N.M. in
numerous segments during the years 1958-1982.

Property rights have  been assigned to the American Jewish Archives. All literary
rights to materials authored by Abraham I. Shinedling are held by the
Shinedling heirs. Literary rights to materials authored by others are held by
the individual author or his/her heirs. Questions concerning rights should be
addressed to the Director of the American Jewish Archives.

The ABRAHAM I. SHINEDLING PAPERS are open to all users. The original manuscript
collection is available in the reading room of the American Jewish Archives. 
Please note, however, that Box 3, folder 7, Nathan Platnick, is restricted 
until the year 2000.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Abraham I. Shinedling was born in Menominee, Michigan on September 8,
1897 to Moses and Dora (Morris) Shinedling. He received an A.B. degree from
the University of Cincinnati in 1919 and was ordained rabbi by the Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati in 1920. He also attended the University of
Georgia from 1923-1924 and received an M.A. degree from Columbia University
in New York in 1928. In 1959 he was awarded by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion the honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity.

Shinedling held a large number and a wide variety of jobs during his
lifetime. From 1920-1926 he served as rabbi at congregations in Joplin,
Missouri, Marshall, Texas, Athens, Georgia, and Goldsboro, North Carolina.
From 1926-1928 he worked as a Hebrew school principal and teacher in the
Bronx, New York and from 1932-1943 he served as a prison chaplain in
Westchester County, New York. Shinedling returned to the congregational
rabbinate in 1943, serving in Alexandria, Louisiana, Selma, Alabama, and
Bluefield and Beckley, West Virginia until 1956.

Also, during this time, from 1928-1943, Shinedling worked as the New
York City editor and historian for the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia. In
addition, from 1950 until his death in 1982, Shinedling also served as 
a staff member of the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati.

Some of Shinedling's activities included membership in the Central
Conference of American Rabbis, B'nai B'rith Lodge No. 36 (Vice-President 
1969-1971), and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Alumni
Association. Shinedling also authored many works, including numerous articles
for the American Hebrew and three books: History of the Beckley Jewish
Community (with Manuel Pickers as co-author): History of the Los Alamos Jewish
Center, 1958; and West Virginia Jewry: Its Origins and History, 1850-1960
(3 vol.), in 1963.

On June 9, 1929 Shinedling was married to the former Helen Lowenstein.
They had one child, Sidney T., born in 1939.

Abraham I. Shinedling died, on October 18, 1982, at the age of 85.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The ABRAHAM I. SHINEDLING PAPERS (1886-1982) describe the career of
Abraham I. Shinedling, rabbi and historian. The collection consists of
correspondence, Shinedling's autobiography, and other writings of Shinedling.
The bulk of the materials in the collection span the years 1960-1980. The
Papers are divided into two series: 

			A. CORRESPONDENCE 
			B. LITERARY PRODUCTIONS.

The CORRESPONDENCE series (1935-1982) consists of three Hollinger boxes
of correspondence arranged alphabetically by the name of the person or
organization. Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder.

The LITERARY PRODUCTIONS series (1886-1981) consists of seventeen
Hollinger boxes of Shinedling's autobiography, memoirs written by Shinedling
of his grandfather, father and brothers, and other writings. The
autobiography, which consists of fifteen boxes and details intimately
Shinedling's life and thoughts, is filed first in this series followed by the
memoirs and other writings arranged alphabetically by title.
